Haar vertolking van de tot het uiterste gedreven Cora in de remake van The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981) was gedeeltelijk geïnspireerd door het sombere leven van B-filmactrice Barbara Payton. In een interview met Rolling Stone vertelde Lange hoe ze dacht dat haar personage eerst naar Hollywood was afgedreven als een aspirant-sterretje, en co-ster Jack Nicholson gaf haar Payton’s lugubere, verhalende autobiografie “I Am Not Ashamed” om door te nemen op de set. Het toeval wil dat Lange en de blonde Payton allebei geboren zijn in Cloquet, Minn.
